📚 Adventures in reading .. week #8 of 52. I read on planes, in the airport, while running on the treadmill, and on my couch at home.

📕 Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

I’m late to the game on this book - and think having grown up in my career in the Air Force around fighter pilots, I probably saw a few things differently. And I understand that hype.

The voice in our heads - and what to do with it. Love how this book reminds readers that the voice in our head can play a helpful (or harmful) role in our lives, and we can actively make choices to help.

Buy the book:

💕 Relationships thrive on reciprocity.

‼️The human need to self-preserve is powerful.

⁉️Zooming out and gaining distance to get perspective is an important strategy.

🤔Wisdom comes through being able to gain distance and perspective.

❤️When supporting others, we need to provide the comfort of Kirk and the intellect of Spock.

🎁 What we give to and receive from other people in our daily interactions constitutes a rich portfolio of comfort for the inner voice.

📘Talk: The Science of Conversation and the Art of Being Ourselves by Alison Wood Brooks. Recommended by Alison Fragale, author of one my newest favorite books “Likeable Badass”. I read this book on a plane, in my office at work & wrapped it up on my couch at home. From curating topics to how to apologize, this book gets to the heart of why conversation is so powerful.

A few ideas I loved:

🤯 “Cognitive offloading” … while I feel like I should know this concept; it feels new & I appreciate knowing it.

⁉️ Questions are the best-known way to learn about others’ perspective. (Might seem obvious … and I know a lot of people who think they know without asking.)

4️⃣ Dominant question types on conversation: introductory, mirror, topic-switching, & follow-up.

🪃 The idea of “boomerasking” … this concept made me both cringe and laugh out loud on the plane.

💕 The first, most basic prerequisite for kindness is respect.

P.s. TALK is an acronym. Read the book to learn what it is!
